Day 12 – Terceira Island

Today was an early morning wake up so we could fly to Terceira Island.

Amazing sunrise on the volcano

We rented a car and started out on an impromptu sight seeing trip of the north coast. First, we stopped at a little inland park that had a river with several small waterfalls.

Next we headed to the coast to check out the miradouros I had read about.

Quatro Ribeiras (Four Ledges)
Mark got me all the way out to the big rock on the point. I had to seriously face my fears but it was so worth it.

The next stop was to see the Piscinas Naturais Biscoitos (natural swimming pools). When the lava flow went out to the ocean, it created an area that fills with tide water but is protected from the severe waves. People swim here (just not these people).

We were ready to find some lunch and nothing was showing up on the map so we just drove into the nearest town. We hit gold! A cute little place was opening for the day so we went in to check it out. It turned out the owner specialized in Alcatra. Basically Azorean pot roast cooked in a clay pot for 23 hours. Amazing!!

He’s a firefighter and his wife is a nurse. The restaurant is only open on his days off.

After lunch we made our way to the Algar do Carvao. A dormant volcano you can go to the bottom of. There are various chambers, lava tubes and a small lake at the bottom.

We made our way to our 83€ hotel room and it is so nice. Tired legs, full bellies and a comfy bed – with a view of the ocean. Heaven!

The view from our room.
